Forestry Harvesting Analysis
A 124,000 acre project has been completed and a 1,000,000 acre site is undergoing analysis to meet forest harvest demands and NEPA comparable quality environmental standards. Long term utility of the area for people's needs and retention of resource quality are mandated objectives. The site is currently undeveloped and unpopulated by humans, access is limited as road nets essentially do not exist. Therefore, remote sensing techniques are being emphasized at the outset both for planning and analysis.
Limited area access and lack of available data are requiring that maximum use be made of remote sensing techniques and the selection of acres from which reasoned extrapolations of surface conditions can be made. Baseline characterizations are being made both as a basis for action and as an input of predictive analyses of possible future activities. This project requires water quality analysis, biological and other efforts. This Forest Resource Cover Type Mapping project is an excellent vehicle for the combined usage of two core competencies. It requires high level, efficient traditional ground based ecosystem assessment skills to characterize the physical, chemical and biological attributes of the project area.
These skills must then be expressed through current technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), data loggers with bar code readers and hand-held laser rangefinders. Data from the field gear are downloaded onto a mapping software and are combined with remote sensing production to produce detailed maps that, in turn, can be used for analysis, modeling, planning, tracking of activities and virtually the full range of technical and administrative needs of any large scale complex resource analysis and management project. Project management through computers will occur between the U.S. and Chile. Real-time updates, the absence of paper and all parties having control of all data with access to each other is producing a cost effective, on schedule, better comprehended project.
