Jacksonville Environmental Mapping

This environmental mapping project was initiated by the City to support the goals and objectives as stated in the City of Jacksonville's Comprehensive Plan. BDA developed an environmental GIS database that allowed the City's Planning Department to meet their objectives of the Conservation Element. The Plan identified the need to inventory and map various sensitive natural resources. We provided the series of land use maps based on satellite imagery that included: habitat of threatened, endangered, and/or species of special concern; freshwater and saltwater marshes; wetlands; and remaining native plant communities.

The project entailed the classification of Landsat thematic mapper images from 1990 to 1993. The classification maps were utilized for a comparative analysis for the existing SJRWMD vegetation and land use map; the comparison of land use change between years; and the creation of several data layers, including soils and wildlife habitat and utilization.

The project applied BDA's capabilities in remote sensing, GIS and GPS applications, and our traditional strengths in ecological mapping and wildlife ecology.
